Upgrade for Transversity
New vertical coil together with existing horizontal coils and new oven allow 3He to be polarized in ALL three directions! New narrow band COMET lasers make optical pumping more efficient: ~70% polarization without beam and expecting >60% polarization with beam. New optics/control system to allow frequent spin flips. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference

Spin Flip/Rotation Target spin will be rotated to increase the Fsl coverage: Total beam time splits into vertical and transverse periods. Target spin gets flipped every 20 minutes, driven by RF to reduce systematic error. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference

Kinematic Coverage E-arm at θ=30°. 0.5 < E’ < 2.2 GeV. 0.13 < x < 0.405, covers the valence-quark region. 1.3 < Q2 < 3.1 (GeV/c)2. 2.33 < W < 3.05 GeV/c2, above the resonance region. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference

Kinematic Coverage H-arm at θ= 16°, measure charged hadrons with p = 2.4 GeV/c. The fraction of the energy transfer carried by the hadrons, z = Eh /ν, is about 0.5 , selecting leading hadrons in the current fragmentation. Missing mass W ’ > 1.5 GeV/c2 to stay away from the resonance production region. Pt cover to ~ 0.5 GeV/c. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference

Status of E06-010 Installation started June 9th. A BigBite detector test run conducted May 2008. Both 3He target and detector preparation are under going. No major problems so far. Two weeks to start commissioning and data taking: Oct 24, 2008 – Feb 5, 2009! Will parasitically take data on Single Arm Single Spin Asymmetry and Double Spin Asymmetry. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference

Summary First measurement of neutron transversity from polarized 3He Target. Data will cover valence range, x = 0.13~0.405. High luminosity and statistics. Absolute error on neutron pion asymmetries is about 3%~5%. Seeing beam really soon! Will also have data on double spin asymmetries and single arm single spin asymmetry. 10/9/2008 Transversity in JLab Hall A Spin 2008 Conference
