2 Understanding Healthy Relationships
Module E: Lesson 1 Grade 12 Active, Healthy Lifestyles Introduction While some of the discussion on legal and illegal substances in this lesson is a review from previous grades, there is a stronger focus on prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. This lesson reinforces the drug classifications and challenges students to consider both the positive and negative effects of all types of drugs. Specific Learning Outcomes 11.SU.1 Explain ways in which drugs and other substances are classified. 11.SU.4 Use reliable information in making healthy decisions for helping self and/or others regarding substance use and abuse. Key Understandings Drugs and other substances are often classified by the way they affect the mind and/or body. Misuse of any drug (OTC, prescription, illegal) can be a serious health risk. Know the benefits and risks of a drug before taking it. Essential Questions How are drugs classified? What information is provided on a prescription drug label? Why? How do you make healthy choices when using different drugs?

5 Characteristics of a Healthy Relationship
1. Closeness Caring and loyal, you trust, care and support each other. 2. Shared goals and beliefs Recognize and respect differences 3. Shared experiences Common interests, experiences 4. Communication Honest and learn to listen as well as speak

7 Steps to Loving Communication
1. Have reasonable expectations 2. Know your own feelings 3. Recognize and correct communication-blocking habits 4. Think before you speak 5. Allow the person to save face

8 Steps to Loving Communication
6. Use assertive communication 7. Decide what is negotiable and what is not. 8. Make time for communication 9. Learn to listen 10. Give each other compliments and positive comments

9 Styles of communication
Passive is viewed as non-participatory. They are shy, withdrawn and avoid confrontation. Passive-Aggressive is viewed as manipulative. They avoid confrontation but will say things behind the other person’s back. Frustrated individuals that try to sabotage others to deal with their anger. Aggressive is viewed as controlling. They are dominant and controlling and will use put-downs to get point across. Bullying mentality. Assertive is viewed as open and honest. They will use direct messages, use “I’ statements and are sensitive to others. This is seen as the most effective form of communication.
