White Space ?: If you were given a deck of cards, what are some ways you could group the individual cards? Challenge Question: How can elements be grouped based on their physical and chemical properties? Background: Read p B19 and write down two facts. Vocabulary: atom: building blocks of elements. Only contains “one” thing. Ex: iron atom is only iron atomic mass: number of protons and neutrons in an element. element: a substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances. family: a group of elements that have many common characteristics. Run vertical in the table. Periodic Table of Elements: a chart of all elements. Arranged by similar characteristics of elements.

Materials: Read over the list on p B-20 Procedure: Read p B20-21 Data: Record your information during the lab into your lab notebook. After step 4, you need to list your groups (classification system) and the common features each group shares. After step 8, you need to record the new classification system. Be sure to include ALL data that is asked in step 9.
