4. Globes The major difference between the Earth and globe is a scale
What is a scale? The area a given space on a map corresponds (matches) to in the real world

5. Photographs
Aerial Photographs: Photographic images of the Earth’s surface take from the air
Satellite images: Pictures of the Earth’s surface taken from a satellite in orbit

6. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS: Computer based systems that store and use information linked to geogrpahic locations.
Why is GIS useful? Helps geographers, mapmakers, government agencies, and businesses collect information on places

7. Map Projections
What is a major problem with showing the globe on a map? The Earth is round
Distortion: Loss of accuracy in the size or position of objects on a map
Projections: Ways to map Earth on a flat surface

8. Mercator
Shows correct shapes and directions but not true distances; Used by sailors; Mercator the Navigator

9. ROBINSON
Nearly correct size and shape of most land areas but the edges are distorted; Robinson is rounded

10. POLAR
Shows the pole, north or south; used by airline pilots
