Community Organizing a.k.a. “Community Planning”
Focuses on: “bringing people together to combat shared problems & increase their say about decisions that affect their lives”
3
Community Organizing Done by generalized steps or a “model”
Important that community is seen as a partner throughout entire process Develop community’s capacities = community building = community development
4
Community Organizing Building coalitions
Eg. What are 5 agencies you would invite to be part of an antismoking coalition? From the “issue checklist”, what steps struck you as very important to complete?
5
Health Promotion Once the community has been organized, and the problem(s) identified, the goals set to combat the problem(s) are considered “Health Promotion” efforts (Why? – because this is the “Health Promotion Era”!) Includes: education, training, research, legislation, policy coordination & community development

Health Promotion Health promotion is not just posters & pamphlets, the WHO states, “health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.” It “represents a mediating strategy between people & their environments, synthesizing personal choice and social responsibility in health to create a healthier future”
7
Health Promotion The Lalonde Report (1974) demonstrated the wide array of influences on health, in particular “lifestyle” factors as a result, many health promotion efforts were directed as strategies to alter identified risk behaviours

3 goal areas 28 Objective areas Specific objectives
13
Program Planning Health Promotion Program Planning is a process where by specific programs are developed to promote & protect health, prevent disease Some examples…
14
Program Planning Issues are often behavioural lifestyle issues and therefore “health education theories” & “behaviour change theories” are applied in the program development Program Plans are developed by following a chosen model We looked at steps for a generalized program plan model
15
