11-3 and 11-4 How is Earth’s surface heated?
How does heat move through the atmosphere?
2
11-3 Radiant Energy The sun gives off radiant energy and warms our atmosphere. Radiation- movement of Sun’s energy through empty space.
3
11-3 Absorption of Energy Dark surfaces absorb light/heat. Light surfaces reflect light/heat.
4
11-3 Energy from the Sun Half (50%) of the sun’s energy is absorbed by Earth’s surface (the ground). Clouds, gases, and dust absorb about 20% of sunlight. The other 30% is reflected back into the atmosphere by clouds and Earth’s surface.

6
11-4 Heat Transfers Heat moves through the atmosphere in 3 ways: 1. Conduction. 2. Radiation. 3. Convection.
7
11-4 Conduction Conduction- transfer of heat through matter by direct contact. The troposphere is heated by conduction due to the warm air touching the ground. The ground was warmed due to absorbing the sun’s energy.
8
11-4 Radiation The atmosphere is also heated by radiation.
The sun’s rays travel through the empty space/layers of the atmosphere and warm it up. Two kinds of radiant energy: long wave and short wave. (draw this).
9
11-4 Convection Convection is the process by which heat travels through a liquid or gas. Warm air/liquid- rises. Cool air/liquid- sinks. Circular convection currents warm the atmosphere.
