2
1. Properties of Materials
Definition: Characteristics that will help determine how a given material will react to a constraint.
3
1. Properties The reaction of a material to constraints and deformation depends on its mechanical properties.
4
2. Types of mechanical properties
a) Hardness Ability to resist indentation b) Elasticity: Ability to return to their original shape c) Resilience: Ability to resist shocks
5
2. Types of mechanical properties
d) Ductility: Ability to be stretched without breaking e) Malleability: Ability to be flattened or bent without breaking f) Stiffness: Ability to retain their shape when subjected to many constraints
6
3. Other properties a) Resistance to corrosion:
Ability to resist the effects of corrosive substances which cause the formation of rust, for example. b) Electrical conductivity: Ability to carry an electric current c) Thermal conductivity: Ability to transmit heat
