2 Lessons 4 and 5 Objective: Adding and Subtracting Integers
Chapter 3 Lessons 4 and 5 Objective: Adding and Subtracting Integers

3 Adding Integers Rules If adding by the SAME sign:
ADD and keep the sign the same. If adding by DIFFERENT signs SUBTRACT and take the sign of the larger number.

4 Here are a few examples:
(-17) same sign Add 43 Keep the sign the same -43

5 Here are a few examples:
(-16) same sign Add 30 Keep the sign the same -30

6 Here are a few examples:
same sign Add 61 Keep the sign the same

7 Here are a few examples:
(-49) same sign Add 84 Keep the sign the same -84

8 Here are a few examples:
7 + (-1) Different sign subtract 6 Take the sign of the larger # +6

9 Here are a few examples:
-8 + 4 Different sign subtract 4 Take the sign of the larger # -4

10 Here are a few examples:
10 + (-12) Different sign subtract 2 Take the sign of the larger # -2

11 Here are a few examples:
Different sign subtract 5 Take the sign of the larger # +5

12 You try these!! -6 + (-8) -14 7 7 + (-11) -4 9 + (-9)

13 On your own Page 123 in your textbook Do numbers odd

14 Now lets try subtracting integers!

15 Subtracting Integers Rules KEEP CHANGE CHANGE
Keep the first number the same Change the subtraction sign to addition Change the second number’s sign 2. Follow the rules of adding integers

16 Keep the sign of the larger #: -5
Here are a few examples! 8 – 13 Keep Change Change 8 + (-13) Different signs Subtract: 5 Keep the sign of the larger #: -5

17 Keep the sign of the larger #: -17
Here are a few examples! -10 – 7 Keep Change Change -10 + (-7) Same signs Add: 17 Keep the sign of the larger #: -17

18 Keep the sign of the larger #: +3
Here are a few examples! 1 – (-2) Keep Change Change 1+ (+2) Same signs Add: 3 Keep the sign of the larger #: +3

19 Keep the sign of the larger #: -3
Here are a few examples! -10 – (-7) Keep Change Change -10 + (+7) Different signs Subtract: 3 Keep the sign of the larger #: -3

20 You try a few! 4 – (-12) +16 -15 – (-5) -10 18 – (-6) +24

21 Your turn in your book Page 130 Numbers 13 – 43 odd
