1 ELEMENT OF ART: VALUE Light and dark of an object; recreated by the artist with the use of marks and shading. (The background of this slide is an example of value – appearing from darkest at the top, to lightest at the bottom)

2 Vocabulary Value Light Highlight Shadow Cast Shadow Reflected Light
Stippling Hatching Cross-Hatching Blending

3 Light Waves of energy through the air that our eyes recognize as light and color light travels in single line;

4 Highlight The spot of an object that is the most illuminated. Light travels in a single line; the first thing it touches will be highlighted.

5 Shadow The lighter illuminated or non-illuminated portion of an object created because the light is blocked by the side of the object closest to the light source When light travels, it cannot bend around an object, so non-illuminated side is called the shadow, aka “form shadow.”

6 Cast Shadow Reflected Light
The projected shadow of an object onto another object or surface is called the cast shadow. Reflected Light The lighter value than the shadow. Located between the shadow and the object’s edge. Value is created by the light bouncing off surface the object is against. Value is never as light as the highlight.
