Robotics Engineering with LabView

2 1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

3 Standard 1.1 1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the problem Redesign Communicate the solutions Develop solutions Select the best solution Test and evaluate Construct a prototype Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

4 Identify the problem in need of a solution.
We were given the design prompt of Creating a robotic arm. This arm must Be capable of picking up objects of Various shapes and sizes and then Depositing them into a specified area. This arm had to be within ceartain Perameters and capable of accomplishing the task at hand. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

5 Research the problem Examine the current state of the issues and current solutions. Student: Describe what you discovered or learned. Many robotic arms that have been created prove to be bulky, unstable, and very problematic to their users. We needed to create an arm that could operate without lease problimatic tendancies. This arm needed to be a smooth operator while also being light weight and efficient. It needed to escape the bulky persona created by its ancestors. This could only be accomplished through a series of trial and error and redesign. . Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

6 Develop solutions Brainstorm
We decided that our arm was going to be built as a stationary operating arm. This arm was going to rest upon some sort of square platform. The arm has to be capable of rotating 360 degrees around the platform. The arm also had to extend outward to reach objects that may be placed outside of a stationary arms reach. There has to be some way for some sort of bucket or contraption to be used to pick up objects. Along with this, there must be some way in which we can lift and lower the grabber. Now we nmeed to make this all fit together using whatever we have available to us. The most abundant are wood, motyors, nxt bricks, legos, and metal gears, screws, nuts, and beams. 9 to respond to the questions
Test and Evaluate the solution(s) Does it work? Does it meet the original design constraints? Can it be manufactured? Is it safe? What happens to the products when its useful life is finished? Use GoAnimate.com to respond to the questions Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

10 Communicate the solution(s)
Describe how the solution(s) best meet(s) the initial need or problem. Publish your GoAnimate video! Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

11 Communicate the solution(s)
Part two Describe the social impacts and tradeoffs of the solution. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

12 Communicate the solution(s)
Part three Complete the Self-Assessment activity. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

13 Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered
Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
