Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

Bearing Your Cross Luke 9:22-26

Jesus Command If we wish to follow Him: 1. Deny Yourself 2. Take up your cross (daily) 3. Follow Jesus

Denying Ourselves "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20

Following Him “Follow Me” is the simplest summary of Christianity For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 1 Peter 2:21-23

Taking Up a Cross We use this language as a metaphor for: Our burdens in life – Galatians 6:4-5  Ga 6:4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. For each one will bear his own load.

Taking Up a Cross We use this language as a metaphor for: Our burdens in life – Galatians 6:4-5 Burdens in serving God – John 15:20 Joh 15:20 "Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 2Ti 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution

Taking Up a Cross We use this language as a metaphor for: Our burdens in life – Galatians 6:4-5 Burdens in serving God – John 15:20 Sacrifices we must make – Luke 18:28-30 Luke 18:28 Peter said, "Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.“ 29 And He said to them, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life."

Taking Up a Cross Our necessary mindfulness of death
Ecclesiastes 7:1-4  Ec 7:1 ¶ A good name is better than a good ointment, And the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth. 2 It is better to go to a house of mourning Than to go to a house of feasting, Because that is the end of every man, And the living takes it to heart.3 Sorrow is better than laughter, For when a face is sad a heart may be happy. The mind of the wise is in the house of mourning, While the mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.

Taking Up a Cross Our necessary mindfulness of death
Ecclesiastes 7:1-4 Psalm 90:12  Ps 90:12 ¶ So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.

Taking Up a Cross Our necessary mindfulness of death
Ecclesiastes 7:1-4 Psalm 90:12 Romans 14:10-12 Ro 14:10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD."12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

Taking Up a Cross Our necessary mindfulness of death A mind to frivolous nature of our pursuits Ecclesiastes 1-3 Ec 1:2 "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity."

Taking Up a Cross Our necessary mindfulness of death A mind to frivolous nature of our pursuits A mind to the glorious hope of our destiny 2 Timothy 1:12, 4:7-8 2Ti 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. 2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
