Character Strong- Habit Development- 25 min Open your I.N. to page Habit Goal *FYI* You have one week from today to retake the vocabulary test for a better grade. You must come in before or after school to take it. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. Habit Development I.N. page 122 Think of a habit you have that you would like to change and write it down Think of what happens before you do this habit and write it down. How are you feeling? Who is around? What circumstances are happening? What are you thinking? Etc. Think of what reward(s) you will get from doing this and write them down. Choose which one you think is the main reward and highlight it. Now, think of a way to obtain your reward in a more positive way and write that down. Patriot Strong!

Answers go on page 40 in full sentences When you are done, begin the individual assignment at the bottom of page 12. You will put your answers on page 41 in the graphic organizer. Patriot Strong!

Who is narrating the story? What textual evidence supports your answer? The narrator is a girl who is a freshman in high school. At one point she says, “I know enough not to bring lunch on the first day of high school” and “I will be forever known as ‘that girl who got nailed by potatoes the first day.’” This shows that she in new to high school. Patriot Strong!

The narrator’s observations are sarcastic and humorous. Do thy reflect her true feelings about others? What evidence in the text supports your answer. The narrator feels alone and judged by all. She thinks about going to a “inconspicuous corner” to hide herself and she never speaks to anyone even though there are so many thoughts in her head. There is point where she calls the football coach “Mr. Neck” which expresses her dislike for him but she does not express it aloud. She is obviously not expressing how she truly feels. Patriot Strong!

What effect does the use of dashes in paragraph 4 have? The dashes surround “people I used to think were my friends” set apart and emphasize the author’s comment which reflects her feelings of being alone at school. Patriot Strong!

Melinda has a vivid inner voice. What is significant, then, about the fact that she never actually speaks in this passage. Melinda choosing not to speak shows how afraid and alone she felt. She is quite articulate and funny but insecure. Patriot Strong!

Paste it at the bottom of page 122 when you finish Green Dot- When the tardy bell rings, get the three papers in the middle of the room for you group. *After the Bell ringer* Red Dot- Get the Springboard books for your group. You will complete the graphic organizer exercise on page 12 in your book. Write your answers on the graphic organizer on page 41 in your I.N. If you do not finish it becomes homework. WE ARE…. September 13, No Bell Ringer Picture day today. Turn in your homework! Green Dots please gather the pages in the middle of the room(Elements of Short Story Notes) for your group. These pages go on pages 42 and 43. The first one (p.42) starts with The _______________ is the ______________ character. I will take roll and we will walk as a class down to get pictures. We will return to the room all together at the same time once everyone’s picture is taken. When you return you will glue in your handout and use the power point handouts at your desks to fill in the notes. Patriot Strong!

Green Dot, after the tardy bell, pick up the maze page for each person in your group. *FYI- There will be a notebook check Monday for all pages after 31. A copy of the table of contents is on your group make sure you update your table of contents.* After the Bell Ringer Red Dot, get books for your group Take out your I.N. and open to page 41. You will exchange your graphic organizer with someone from a different table with the same color spot as you and complete the third column 10 min. Patriot Strong!
