2 The Federal Government’s Budget
Every February or March, the federal government releases its budget for the next year. The 2018 Budget was presented on February 27, 2018. Every year the federal government also releases an update on the budget numbers in the fall. The Government of Canada’s Fall Economic Update was released on November 21, 2018.

3 2018 Expenditures The 2018 federal budget projected expenditures for to be $338.5 billion. In the fall economic statement, the projected expenditures were increased to $344.1 billion.

4 2018 Revenue The federal budget projected the amount of revenue for to be $323.4 billion. In the fall economic statement, revenue projections were increased to $328.9 billion.

5 Surplus or Deficit? Based on the project 2018 revenues and expenditures, will the Government of Canada have a surplus or a deficit?

6 The deficit and our debt
In the February 2018 budget, the federal government was projecting a deficit of $15.1 billion for this fiscal year. In the fall economic statement, the deficit was increased to $18.8 billion. To cover this gap, the federal government will borrow money and this amount will be added to the government’s debt. The federal government’s debt is currently estimated to be $687.7 billion.

9 2018 Budget Announcements Announcements and measures released in the 2018 federal Budget include: The federal budget will not be balanced until 2022. Pay-equity legislation for employees in the federal government, and federal-regulated sectors, to reduce the pay gap. $1.2-billion over five years to create a new five-week "use-it-or-lose-it" incentive for parental leave for new fathers. $447-million over five years to create a new Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program. $1.4-billion over six years for First Nations child and family services.

10 2018 Budget Announcements Increase the take-home pay of low-income workers through a revamped tax credit called the Canada Workers Benefit. A new advisory council tasked with performing an economic assessment and running consultations on the feasibility of a national pharmacare program.
