1 Welcome! October 24th, 2018 Thursday
Do Now Grab a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Define ethos again. Then, write me three examples.

2 Patrick Henry Born in 1736 in Virginia Protested British Tyranny
Five-term, governor of Virginia Delivered the famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” line at the Second Virginia Convention

3 Pre-Write If you were a colonist, would you have been willing to risk your life for freedom from Britain’s rule? Would you be willing to risk your life for your freedom today, as a U.S. citizen in the 21st century? Is there cause you would risk your life for?

4 Speech to the Second Virginia Convention
As we listen to Henry’s speech, keep track of the different types of appeals he uses (ethos, logos, or pathos).

5 Speech to the Second Virginia Convention
Choose two of the following three questions to answer: Do you think Henry was being accurate when he says, “For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery”? Find one allusion Henry makes in his speech. What effect does the allusion have on his speech? In other words, why do you think he included it? “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience.” Is this an example of ethos, pathos, or logos? Explain.

6 “Give me Liberty” by Havoc
4. Watch the music video by Havoc. As you watch, make a list of the different ways Havoc’s video claims the U.S. government oppresses its citizens.

7 “Give me Liberty” by Havoc
5. What types of rhetorical appeals does Havoc use throughout its video? Give at least two specific examples (which don’t have to be quotes). 6. Opinion: Do you agree with Havoc’s video? Do you think we are being oppressed by our own government like the colonists were oppressed by Britain? Explain.

8 Done? Look at your late work and turn in anything not done.
Look ahead at the IXL that we’ll do on Friday (11th grade I.1 and I.2).
