1 The Life of Christ – Lesson 7
November 28, 2018 Matthew Chapters 5-7 Luke 6:20-49 The Life of Christ – Lesson 7 The Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 7:1-24

2 “The log that is in your own eye …” Matthew 7:1-5
Do you want to help others? Take care of your own spiritual needs so you can help others with theirs! Acts 20:28; Galatians 6:1 “In the case of the loss of cabin pressure …” “Why do you look at the speck …” – i.e., keep looking at. James 2:12-13, “So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.” Note the parallel text of Luke 6:38-40, we need to first have clear vision (Matthew 6:22- 23) so the blind are not leading the blind.

3 “The speck … (and) the log …” Matthew 7:1-5
“Speck” – a twig, piece of straw, chaff, splinter. “Log” – a rafter, log or beam. Same material, just greater. Do both need to be removed? Focus on self before we turn to others. This isn’t instruction on how to respond when another corrects or admonishes us. It’s a personal commitment to looking into the mirror of the word and making changes when needed. James 1:22-25

4 “Do not give what is holy … do not throw your pearls …” Verse 6
How does this fit in the context of this sermon? Jesus had just been addressing (verses 1-5) when and how to offer rebuke, judgement or correction to another. “Holy” – The gospel, God’s word is referred to as “the holy commandment” – spiritual truth. 2 Peter 2:21 “Pearls” – Jesus said seeking the kingdom is like seeking “fine pearls” (Matthew 13:45-46)

5 “Do not give what is holy … do not throw your pearls …” Verse 6
Not direction for man to deem who is worthy of the gospel and who’s not. Nor is it for man to determine who will listen and who will not. Ezekiel 3:11; 2 Timothy 4:2 Nor is it an excuse for impatience. Rather a practical admonition regarding our stewardship of time and opportunities. Jesus instructed the twelve to “shake the dust off their feet” as they leave the house or city that does not “receive” the “words” of God. (Matthew 10:14)

6 “Do not give what is holy … do not throw your pearls …” Verse 6
Exemplified when Paul turned to the Gentiles – Acts 13:45-51; 18:5-6. The Jews had judged themselves unworthy of what is holy and the pearls. “Do not turn from it to the right or to the left …” (Joshua 1:7). We’re not to deem who’s worthy of preaching the gospel to nor should we expend our time on those who’ve rejected the gospel. We bear the watchman's duty. Ezekiel 3:16-21
