Presentation II Jerric Ritos Conde Northern Marianas College
En101 – 06 English Composition I Dr. Kimberly Bunts-Anderson

Process For collecting data, the student researcher planned on have 40 NMC students take an electronic survey, but only received 12 responses out of the 40. The student researcher was not able to conduct interviews with other NMC students, and the Bureau of Environmental Quality (BECQ) due to Typhoon Yutu. After all the data has been collected, the student researcher will compare the collected data with the information that was found in the academic sources.

Results/Findings 7 out of 12 people are AWARE that our coral reefs are affected by storms. 8 out of 12 people are AWARE that our coral reefs are affected by bleaching. 6 out of 12 people have never read any informative text about the threats our coral reefs face. 10 out of 12 people would consider donating funds to protect our coral reefs because they all agree that without coral reefs, our island would be vulnerable to tsunamis. They also agreed that without the coral reefs, there would be no fish. 8 out of 12 people agree that not many people are aware the threats our coral reefs face.

Results/Findings 5 out of 12 people say that coral reefs are dying, and the rest do not know. 9 out of 12 people have been to the coral reef. 11 out of 12 people care about our coral reefs. 8 out of 12 people agree that there is NOT enough education in schools that teach about the threats our coral reefs face.

Analysis After collecting data through the electronic survey, most of the responses show that not many people are aware of the threats our coral reefs face. Most of the people who took my survey would consider donating funds to protect our coral reefs. To spread more awareness, environmental agencies, schools, would need to teach more about our coral reefs. If nothing is done about this, we could potentially have our island wiped out by a tsunami or we could lose the important marine animals that see the coral reefs as their home. To improve my research, I would want an opportunity to interview BECQ, and interview experts off island that know a lot about coral reefs.
