2. Tutorials???
THE BASICS - Will take place every Wednesday or Thursday - A group study approach that is guided by helping each other - I will place you in groups of 3 or 4…these groups will change every nine weeks - You and your group will work together to help each other understand the material in your classes - Because you will be an active participant, tutorials will allow you to discover new ideas and take ownership in your learning - You will respect the ideas/thinking of the other students in your group

6. Before the Tutorial
Step 1: In your classes, you will take Cornell notes. Then, after class, you review your notes, ask questions, and write a summary. Step 2: For homework, the night before a tutorial, you pick a class that you are struggling in/getting a low grade in and write two questions from your notes, class work, or homework on your Tutorial Request Form (TRF) Step 3: As you enter class, I will collect and check your Tutorial Request Form

7. During the Tutorial
Step 4: You will get in your pre-assigned group of 3 or 4. Your group sits in a semi-circle (horseshoe) facing a white board on which the presenter can write his or her question. Step 5: The presenter (the student with a question) writes his/her question on the white board and explains to the group members his/her knowledge and understanding of the question. Then, the group asks questions to each other and the presenter in order to solve the problem. As the presenter begins to better understand his/her question, he/she records the steps/notes on the white board so the entire group can see the process. IT IS NOT THE GROUP’S RESPONSIBILITY TO GIVE THE PRESENTER THE ANSWER. YOU WANT THE PRESENTER TO TRY AND FIGURE IF OUT ON HIS/HER OWN.

8. Step 6: Step 5 is repeated for each remaining group member

9. After the Tutorial
Step 7: You will be responsible to write a reflection on your learning. You will pick one of your two questions. This reflection is to be written on your Tutorial Request Form (TRF) Step 8: You will turn in your TRF before you leave the classroom. I will grade it and give it back to you the next day. Step 9: If time permits, we will discuss the tutorial as a class…concerns you may have, its effectiveness, and ideas for making them better

10. Responsibilities
STUDENT PRESENTER - Present a question or problem to the group - Interact and answer questions from the group - Make an effort to pursue and answer or solution SEATED STUDENTS - Understand and listen to the presenter’s question/problem - Ask questions that clarify and help the presenter think deeper about an answer or solution - Discuss with each other strategies to move the presenter’s thinking when he/she gets stuck
