2 In the late 1990’s a research project looked into services for people with mental health problems in Ryedale. A steering group was formed to answer the identified needs of the research Next Steps was established in for people with mental health problems and their carers

Our Story Next Steps set up 2001 To support local people in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. We support individuals with disabilities, physical/mental health issues or those suffering from social isolation and loneliness As a user-led organisation we encourage everyone to be involved in the planning and running of Next Steps How we help? Offers services to our users/volunteers through a drop-in centre in Norton and outreach groups in Kirkbymoorside and Pickering Everyone can be assured of a warm welcome from Leisa and the team

5 Working to support Communities
Our Community Cafe provides Volunteering Opportunities Volunteering? Learn new skills (how to prepare meals and snacks) Make new friends Develop greater self confidence, self esteem and belief Learn about good practice in a work environment e.g. food hygiene Learn how to develop positive working and personal relationships Learn about good customer service Improve employment prospects and gain a valuable work reference.

6 How we are managed? . A registered charity managed by a board of 12 trustees and a valuable Chairman, Vice Chair and Treasurer Managed and led by Mental health professional Leisa Burniston with:- Over 22 years experience in Mental Health and Social Care settings and 8 years Management Experience Many other qualifications and training Qualifications: Management in Social Care Organisations (degree) NVQ in Care Training: Child Protection Assist (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills) CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) Mental Health Training (Safeguarding, Alerter, First Aid, Lone-working and more)

What our service users say…………………… I have made friends. It’s nice to chat and have a laugh rather than been at home I have always been listened to and helped with difficult things and nothing is too much trouble I enjoy participating in Out of Hours trips to see shows, my favourite was Singing in the Rain

What our volunteers say…………………… Since starting with Next Steps I have made new friends and become more confidence and enjoy talking to people I have become more confident and outspoken It’s like a second home. I enjoying meeting, listening and talking to people. Since volunteering with Next Steps it has helped reduce my anxiety, meet new people, gain new skills and a chance for training development. It has been my incentive to get out of bed, gaining my next step on my life journey I have come from being totally isolated for many years, then became a volunteer and moved onto the role of trustee

Men in Sheds The Men in Sheds initiative was set up originally in Norton in March specifically to encourage men to put their practical skills to good use and to be more socially active. TODAY many ideas come from the men engaging in the activities and wishing to share their own skills with others. We welcome all new ideas if you have a skill to share with others

17 Our Community Cafe Support our fundraising through donations or by enjoying our community cafe to support you and others in the Ryedale Community. At Next Steps we support community businesses by using local produce for our community café. Hot meals Hot drinks and cakes Takeaways Snacks

19 Intervention & Prevention
Our aim is to ensure people are able to access support by Next Steps or Statutory Services at the right time:- To improve physical and mental health. To promote positive family relationships. To prevent further deterioration of physical and mental health issues. To ensure people feel valued as a member of communities and society. To ensure individuals are not discriminated against on the grounds of physical/mental disability or ill health.

20 Partnerships with external agencies
As a user-led organisation we work closely in partnerships with GPs, community mental health teams and external agencies. Our partnerships with external agencies helps us to ensure people affected by mental/physical health issues feel they are supported appropriately.

21 How to access our services?
