Explain the work of the Freedmen's Bureau. c. Explain how slavery was replaced by sharecropping and how African-Americans were prevented from exercising their newly won rights; include a discussion of Jim Crow laws and customs.

A Few Facts about Reconstruction
The time period after the Civil War, lasting from 1865 to 1877. During this time, the nation tried to get back on track from the Civil War. With the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became the president responsible for implementing the new changes. Since the South was devastated by the Civil War, plans to improve the economy and government of the nation had to be put in place. Newly freed slaves had to figure out how to live life out of slavery.

Amendments There were three amendments added to the Constitution at the end of the Civil War: The thirteenth amendment outlawed slavery The fourteenth amendment granted citizenship to all people born in the United States. The fifteenth amendment allowed African-American men the right to vote.

The Jim Crow Laws Known as “separate, but equal.”
These laws required African Americans to be separated from Whites in public. African Americans and Whites had separate: - schools - transportation - other various public areas

The South after the Civil War
The South was devastated after the Civil War and faced many changes to their economy and government. The Republicans had power after the Civil War. Northern people who moved to the South in order to make money were called carpetbaggers. Southerners who supported Republican policies after the Civil War were called scalawags.

Sharecropping Sharecropping began to rise as slavery ended.
Sharecropping is when farmers rented a piece of land from an owner and paid for the land by giving the owner a share of what they earned. This was one of the only options of work for freed slaves, and often they were taken advantage of by white plantation owners.

Freedmen’s Bureau Freedmen’s Bureau was initiated by Abraham Lincoln in 1865 for slaves after the Civil War. This government agency provided food, housing, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. This agency was only supposed to last a year, but it disbanded in 1871 by Ulysses S. Grant.
