Perennial Questions about the Inclusive Curriculum
What do you mean by the inclusive curriculum? I treat all my students fairly and equally. It would be quite wrong to change my responses to students according to their gender, race, colour … ‘Curriculum’ is the syllabus isn’t it? – I can’t change that. That’s decided at the course approval committee, which I’m not a member of – I have to follow the syllabus I’m given. Same goes for assessment – there are x assignments and y exams for my module which I, a mere lecturer, can’t change. How can you introduce gender perspectives into the basic laws of physics and mathematics?

Current themes in Inclusive Curriculum Development
Investigating students’ and lecturers’ assessment of how inclusive their course or module is. Inclusiveness of work experience/placements has been neglected. Including, usually in the final year, the topic of the severe under-representation of women in the profession. Preparation for challenging the sexual politics shown by research to operate in many engineering workplaces.
