Reactivity of metals 1: water
The image shows 1.5kg of sodium being dropped into water. S2 Chemistry Classifying chemicals and chemical reactions
2
Learning outcomes Success criteria
Understand how metals compare in terms of their reactivity. You can state two ways in which the reactivity of different metals can vary. Understand the reactivity of metals with water. You can name the two products produced when a metal reacts with water. You can write a word equation for the reaction of a metal with water. Given the name of a metal, you can state whether or not it reacts with water. Given a list of names of metals, you can put them in order in terms of their reactivity with water.

Know the chemical test for hydrogen. You can describe the test, including: what you would use to do the testing the result of the test.
4
Someone is in the balloon who shouldn’t be!
Who should be thrown out? Why? Magnesium Aluminium This is a discussion exercise. Lots of good chemistry should come up. However, the main teaching point is that ALUMINIUM should be thrown out. It is the only one which doesn’t react with water. Potassium Lithium
8
What does this photo tell you about the properties of hydrogen?
Hydrogen is insoluble in water. It is less dense than water. These are physical properties. What does this photo tell you about the properties of hydrogen? Are these physical or chemical properties?
9
Complete these word equations
Lithium + water → ………. + ………. Sodium + water → ………. + ………. ………. + ………. → calcium hydroxide + hydrogen Lithium hydroxide + hydrogen Sodium hydroxide + hydrogen Calcium + water
10
Write a word equation for the reaction of caesium and water.
11
Which metal is reacting with water?
12
Calcium - It is more dense than water and is reacting quickly
13
Potassium
14
