2 Lesson 3: Vocabulary 1. Polytheist (adjective) – belief in more than one god Example sentence: It is interesting to note that polytheist religions, one god usually reigns supreme over the other gods, e.g. Greek / Roman mythology and Brahman in Hinduism

3 Lesson 3: vocabulary 2. Heliolatry (noun) – worship the sun
Example sentence: Heliolatry was a common practice of those who worried about their crops and prosperity. / When I told my boss I was going to practice heliolatry he though I was a pagan. But really, heliolatry is just a euphemism for working on my tan.

4 Lesson 3: vocabulary 3. Isodynamic (noun) – equal powers or force
Example sentence: Steven did several sets of isodynamic dumbbell presses to build an equal amount of muscle mass on each arm. // Do Batman and Superman have isodynamic powers? This word also has to do with an imaginary line on the earth's surface connecting points of equal horizontal intensity of the earth's magnetic field.

Chronometer (noun) – highly accurate clock or watch Example sentence: Chronometers are based off of Greenwich time. // The ship's chronometer gives the date as being March 21st 3085. Chronometer, a timepiece that is exceptionally accurate. Traditionally, the term refers to the marine chronometer, a rugged mechanical instrument used at sea to keep time for navigational purposes.  Chron = time Meter = measure

6 Lesson 3: vocabulary 5. Monochrome (noun) – one color
Example sentence: The presentation was very boring because of the monochrome graphics used. // Earlier cell phones only had monochrome  displays and the maximum you could do was text messages or call someone. Monochrome can also be used as an adjective… for example, older televisions that reproduce images in tones of gray… a monochrome television. This word can also mean something that is devoid of any distinctive or stimulating characteristics, not just colors. For example, Within the caves, the monochrome  lifelessness of the desert gave way to an exuberance of color and movement.

7 Lesson 3: vocabulary 6. Perimeter (noun) – outer boundary of a figure or area Example sentence: The perimeters of all schools must remain tobacco free due to new laws in legislation. A perimeter is a path that surrounds a two-dimensional shape. The word comes from the Greek peri (around) and meter (measure). The term may be used either for the path or its length - it can be thought of as the length of the outline of a shape. The perimeter of a circle or ellipse is called its circumference. Ex. Black-clad guards roamed the internal perimeter while others manned the walls of the compound. This is the perimeter of Georgia Perimeter College

8 Lesson 3: vocabulary 7. Orthophonic (adjective) – correct or good sound Example sentence: The band director tuned the band to make an orthophonic sound. This is a rather obscure word… ortho = straight or correct /// phon = sound Reproducing sounds authentically, enunciating correctly The Victor Orthophonic Victrola first demonstrated publicly in 1925, was the first consumer phonograph designed specifically to play "electrically" recorded disks. The combination was recognized instantly as a major step forward in sound reproduction.

9 Lesson 3: vocabulary 8. Isometric (adjective) – equal in measure
Example sentence: In geometry we had to find the missing angle of many isometric polygons. Isometric exercise or isometrics are a type of strength training in which the joint angle and muscle length do not change during contraction. Isometrics are done in static positions, rather than being dynamic through a range of motion.

Geometric ( adjective) – measurement of points, figures, and lines Example sentence: The geometric shapes baffled the young child leaning mathematics. // While visiting the Indian reservation, I bought a buffalo hide painted with red and black geometric designs. Relating to, or according to the methods or principles of geometry

Centrifugal (adjective) – force that makes rotating bodies move away from center of rotation Example sentence: The centrifugal force cause the water to stay in the bucket when the child spun it upside down. This basically means using or acting by centrifugal force We can also mean something that is tending away from centralization, so a separatist for example. Governments need to establish a common language and historic identity to counter centrifugal tendencies in modern society

12 Lesson 3: vocabulary 11. Heliocentric (adjective) – sun as the center
The root “helio” comes from the Greek Helios which means sun. Helios was also a sun god who drove his chariot across the sky every morning. Then of course “centri” meaning center. Example sentence: Nicolaus Copernicus revived the idea of a heliocentric solar system, in which the Earth and planets revolve around the sun, as opposed to a geocentric solar system with the Earth at the center.

Theology (noun) – study of God and religious doctrines Example sentence: Students of theology, or theologians, use various forms of analysis and argument to help explain and understand any number of religious topics. // My cousin was fascinated with religion and decided to study theology in the monastery. Theology as an academic discipline involving rational study of Christian teaching // the term passed into English in the fourteenth century // can also mean rational study of the essential nature of God. From the 17th century onwards, it also became possible to use the term 'theology' to refer to study of religious ideas and teachings that are not specifically Christian or that are specific to another religion. Augustine of Hippo (354–430), Latintheologian. His writing on free will andoriginal sin remains influential in Western Christendom.
