3 Announcements: Today is going to be somewhat overwhelming. New program, new venue, and tons of info. Hang in there! Daily Routine - Sign-in daily on the clipboard and be on time. Emergencies or questions – call Debbie Don’t hesitate to ask a question. Lunches -There will be a few working lunch days where meals are provided. Majority of the time you will need to provide your own lunch. Tangeman Center has a food court. Subway is on the corner. Backpack– Backpacks and Laptops to keep if you complete the program. Assignments – Starting tomorrow, you will be responsible for writing up summaries of the PD sessions you attend. Each one of you will write summaries for 2-3 PD/Field Trip sessions. – Refer to the colored handout Specific Materials –Envelopes contain: Flashdrive, Parking Passes, Key to room 756 Baldwin, and M#. Key and Parking Passes get returned 7/27. – Distribute (Keep the white envelop to return the Key and Parking Pass.) Library Access - Sometime this week, in advance of the workshop, please try out the off-campus access prior to the library session. Login (proxy)

5 Goals of The RET Site Activities
Goal 1: Explore the scientific method of inquiry and the critical research skills that engineers use to solve open-ended real-world problems Goal 2: Become role models by applying research experiences in classrooms and with colleagues Goal 3: Implement Challenge Based Learning and Engineering Design Process in a Unit of instruction with students in your classroom. Goal 4: Link education to events and issues occurring within the community and encourage students to become effective citizens in a technology- driven society

Calendar of Events: Week 1 – Engineering Design Class, Key PD Sessions Week 2 – Research Training begins phase into conducting Research, RET and CEEMS PD Sessions Weeks 3 – 6 – Research continues, RET and CEEMS PD Sessions, Field Trips Week 7 – Formal completion of Research Report, PPT and Video by RET Teachers, Culmination Event and Presentations by RET Teachers Routine Events: Conducting Research Progress Meetings with RET Teachers, AC, and GRA Weekly Surveys completed by RET Teachers, AC, and GRA Field Trips PD Sessions Deliverables Check for RET Teachers Bi-Weekly Presentations (Week 3 and Week 5)

Weekly: Assigned PD Session summaries Log book entries Weekly Reflective Feedback Survey - Examine Week 7: Team Written Research Project Report Team PowerPoint Presentation with individual Unit Component Team Video Unit Template and Activity Templates Individual Teacher Poster Draft of Journal Article NSF Summary Report (4-5 page document for NSF)

9 RET Teacher Deliverables - Post RET Summer
Community of Practice Meeting 1 – (January) RET Unit implemented in classroom – (Before February 15th) Unit Plan and Activity Templates are updated after implementation Updated Unit Plan and Activity Templates are approved by RET Resource Teachers and then posted on the wiki All Student Performance data is collected and analyzed – (Before February 15th) Final RET Unit Poster – (By March 15th) Final RET Unit Video – (By March 15th) Community of Practice Meeting 2 with the Culmination Event for Final Presentation of Deliverables via Power Point - (~ late March) Presentation of RET Unit Poster at the 2018 STEM Conference.

11 Laboratory and Office Usage and Safety
Attire Closed toe shoes Full length pants Safety glasses, lab coats, and masks when needed Hard hats when needed You can bring clothes to change for the afternoon Equipment training and usage Provided by laboratory technician and/or Graduate Research Fellow prior to usage No equipment should be used without receiving training All tools borrowed should be returned before the end of the day

Never work alone when testing Use of Project Office RET Project Office, Baldwin 756, should be kept clean on a daily basis ‑ no exceptions Lock the room after leaving – no exceptions Copy Machine Usage For printing needs, please see Debbie or Amy for use of printer in office at 609 Old Chemistry Building.
