1 Plot Structure in Fiction

2 First, why does it matter for the SAT?
Some of the passages on the SAT are taken from longer fictional works. In order to properly understand the passage, you want to make sure you can follow what is going on! It will ask you questions about events/ interactions that surround the plot!

3 So what exactly is plot? Plot is how you describe the structure and events of a story. It’s the “what” of the tale.

4 There are three main plot types:
Chronological order Flashback In the middle of the action with no exposition Most plots follow the typical pyramid structure!

5 What elements make up the pyramid?
Exposition: the start of the story, the situation before the action starts Rising Action: the series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax Climax: the turning point of the story (it’s usually the big action scene) Falling Action: all of the action that follows the climax Resolution: the conclusion, the tying together of loose ends

6 Conflict is the main bulk of the story!
There are three types of conflict! Man vs. Man/Society Man vs. Nature Man vs. Self

7 Alright, let’s try an example!
Think of a story that is widely known!
