Care Services Discovery (CSD) A new draft IHE Profile for searching for care services by proximity and availability

Agenda Introductions What problem is being solved? What are some key use cases for Care Services Discovery (CSD)? What approach is being explored for this profile? Leveraging experience from Australia Leveraging IHEs Health Provider Directory (HPD) Next steps for CSD 2

Care Service Discovery (CSD) CSD is able to respond to queries regarding when combinations of people and/or services will be available, where these will be provided, and what is their proximity to a specific geographic location. Who? What? Where? When? 4

Use Case 1: Service Discovery Mosa is a young pregnant woman who lives in a village in sub-Saharan Africa. Grace is a community health worker in Mosas village. During an antenatal care visit, Grace uses an mHealth application to note that Mosas blood pressure is elevated. Mosa should see a nurse. The mHealth application uses CSD to search for nearby clinics. Grace receives an SMS listing the closest facility and the day of the next maternal care clinic there. 6

Use Case 2: Specialist Discovery David Lambert sees his family physician, Dr. Black, regarding a recent knee injury. Dr. Black diagnoses the problem as a torn ACL and decides to refer David to an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Black uses his EMR to invoke CSD to search for orthopedic surgeons. A list is returned sorted by available consult timeslot (soonest to latest) and by proximity to Davids home (closest to farthest). 8

How will CSD work? The approach for CSD is informed by three key interoperability specifications: 1.OMGs Service Directory (ServD) specification Australian-led project; Expected ballot June, 2013 2.The IHE Health Provider Directory (HPD) Profile IHE Trial Implementation 2010 3.iCalendar specification (IETF RFC 2445) vFREEBUSY transaction A set of four actors are defined to execute the transactions 10

David needs to see an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Blacks EMR invokes a CSD service to find surgeons with the soonest available consult slots who are close to Davids home. Dr. Black can now use his EMR to book an eReferral for David. 40
