2 King Cotton Natives pushed out = land for growing cotton.
Greatly in demand from England & the North Slave trade and plantations grew greatly. Mostly in the deep south Left the South dependent on agriculture

3 Southern Farms Most of the population had small farms
Not wealthy men; very self-sufficient Large Plantations – biggest money makers 12% of plantation owners held over 50% of the slaves in the South. About half of farms had 5 or less slaves

4 Life in Slavery Most worked in fields, some lucky to work in the homes or have a trade skill. Started field work at 1o years old. Worked long days – owners wanted to keep slaves as busy as possible. Ate mostly cornmeal, pork fat, molasses and whatever they grew.

6 Nat Turner Religion leader among slaves.
Taught himself to read and write. 1831 – led 50 men on a violent rebellion in Virginia. Killed over 55 white people. Later hanged as his punishment. Led to greater slave codes.
