1 3.2 Igneous Rocks

2 Formation of Igneous Rocks
1. Intrusive igneous rocks are formed when magma hardens beneath Earth’s surface. 2. Extrusive igneous rocks are formed when lava hardens.

3 Classification of Igneous rocks
Texture Composition

4 Classification of Igneous rocks
Texture Coarse-grained texture is caused by slow cooling resulting in larger crystals.

5 Fine grained igneous texture
Fine-grained texture is caused by rapid cooling resulting in smaller, interconnected mineral grains.

6 3.Glassy texture is caused by very rapid cooling.

7 4. Porphyritic texture is caused by
4. Porphyritic texture is caused by different rates of cooling resulting in varied sized minerals.

8 Classification of igneous rocks
Another way to classify igneous rocks is by their composition Composition- What the rock is made up of

9 Granitic composition rocks are made mostly of light-colored quartz and feldspar.

10 Basaltic composition rocks are made mostly of dark-colored silicate minerals and plagioclase feldspar.

11 • Andesitic composition rocks are between granitic light-color minerals and basaltic composition dark-colored minerals.

12 • Ultramafic composition rocks are made mostly from iron and magnesium-rich minerals.
