The Cold War

No more common enemy During WW2 Stalin (Soviet Union), Churchill (England) and FDR/Truman (USA) had to work together and be friends. Once the war was over the friendship ended. FDR died and Churchill was voted out. The sides were: England/US vs. Soviet Union

Truman stands up to Stalin
Stalin hoped that he could take advantage of Harry Truman. Truman stood up to Stalin and warned Stalin he had a new devastating weapon. Both leaders did not like or trust the other.

More broken deals At the Yalta Conference the Big Three agreed that Poland, Bulgaria and Romania would hold free elections. However Stalin later went back on his deal. The Allies started to put the Nazi’s on trial in the Nuremberg Trials.

The Soviet’s View The Soviet Union had been betrayed by Hitler and did not trust others. They wanted to control small nations around the world so they could not be caught off guard again. These were called Satellite Nations. (Like Cuba) The Soviet’s also wanted to spread communism around the world.

Anger over Germany Stalin took control over East Germany and refused to let them run themselves again. He set up a brutal communist government and built a wall to separate it from the rest of Germany controlled by the Allies. Churchill called the Soviet Union and their countries the Iron Curtain and urged the world to stop it from spreading.

And so it starts… With the Soviet Union trying to spread communism and the United States trying to stop it the Cold War begins. In a cold war militaries do not directly fight. Instead wars are fought in smaller countries. Countries battle economically and politically

Who’s number 1? England broke and hurting from the war told the United States they could no longer protect Europe. Harry Truman gave the Truman Doctrine and vowed that the United States as a world power would protect the world from the Soviet Union.
