2. Tone and Diction
Remember: tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject matter.
As you read, Think about how the author feels about what he or she is discussing. Diction is the word choices that the author makes to give us hints about how he or she feels. Focus on Specific words - not Phrases.

"Why the hell didn't you pick up the phone all afternoon?"
"Is everything okay? I called you many times this afternoon"
"Were you on a special mission to the moon this afternoon?"

WAtch the following video of Lizzie Velasquez speaking. Afterwards, We will take a Passage from her speech and decide what we believe her tone is based on her word choice.

“front seat” Lizzie uses this example of being in the front seat to show that she’s in a position of control or power.
“Choose” Lizzie uses this word to show that even though there are things in our lives that we can’t control, we can decide how we are going to respond to the things that happen to us.
“Ladder” Because a ladder takes us up, Lizzie’s use the word ladder helps to emphasize that making herself better or looking up

“TURN” Lizzie uses this word to show a change in direction.
“define” Lizzie uses this word to show the power in how we see ourselves as people. What are the most important characteristics about ourselves that define who we are? She uses this word repeatedly to show the importance of valuing your self-worth.
