Classification of Matter
PURE SUBSTANCES MIXTURES SOLUTIONS MECHANICAL MIXTURES ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS
3
MIXTURES Contain more than one type of particle Solids, liquids or gas
Most common Have variable composition Two types: SOLUTIONS AND MECHANICAL MIXTURES
4
SOLUTIONS At least two types of particles
Particles uniformly scattered (can’t tell one from the other) Separation techniques: distillation, evaporation Eg. Perfume, cream in coffee, alloys (2+ metals)
5
MECHANICAL MIXTURES At least two types of particles
Particles NOT uniformly scattered (can tell one from the other) Separation techniques: filtration, evaporation Eg. Soil, pizza, orange juice with pulp
6
PURE SUBSTANCES Contains only one type of atom or molecule
Can be natural (cotton) or synthetic (polyester)
7
ELEMENTS One type of particle (atom)
100+ different kinds (see periodic table) Includes diatomic atoms (O2, N2, H2, etc.)
8
COMPOUNDS More than one type of atom Must be on the periodic table
Does not include diatomics Eg. CO2, H2O
