1
VOCABULARY physical properties – shape, density, solubility, odor, melting point, boiling point, and color chemical properties – acidity, basicity, combustibility, and reactivity
2
SHAPE the external form or appearance characteristic of someone or something; the outline of an area or figure
3
DENSITY the relationship between the mass of the substance and how much space it takes up
4
SOLUBILITY the quantity of a particular substance that can dissolve in a particular solvent
5
ODOR having a distinctive smell
6
MELTING POINT the temperature at which a given solid will melt
7
BOILING POINT the temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor
8
COLOR the way an object appears to reflect light Ex: Green, Yellow, Red, Blue, Purple
9
pH Scale pH focuses on concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-). The scale measures values from 0 all the way up to 14. Distilled water is 7 (right in the middle). Acids are found between 0 and 7. Bases are from 7 to 14. Most of the liquids you find every day have a pH near 7.
10
ACIDICITY the level of acid in substances such as water, soil, or wine; the concentration of hydroxide (H+) Ions in a substance 0 – 6.9 on pH scale Ex: lemon juice, gastric acid (in your stomach)
11
BASICITY the state of being a base; having a higher concentration of hydroxide (OH-) ions in a substance 7.1 – 14 on the pH scale Ex: drain cleaner; ammonia
12
COMBUSTABILITY the quality of being capable of igniting and burning
13
REACTIVITY tending to participate readily in reactions
