What is a verb? A word that shows someone is doing something
A word that expresses what something is A verb tells what a noun IS or what it is DOING

Two kinds of verbs Action verbswords that show what the subject is DOING/what is HAPPENING in the sentence Ryan asked a question about the warm-up. I ran today. Linking verbsshow a state of being; connect the subject to a word in the predicate that completes it (SUBJECT COMPLEMENT) I was tired yesterday. (“tired” is the predicate adjective) Alessandro is my famdawg. (“famdawg” is the predicate nominative) I am evil. (“evil” is the predicate adjective)

Action verbs take a direct object (D.O.) because they show something that you DO Linking verbs take a subject complement

Dragons can destroy villages as they are built.
Did you know that dinosaurs are extinct? Dinosaurs like to eat. I will need my wand for this dragon. Do you like dragons?

Verb Phrases Phrase=group of words (helping verb + main verb) Verb phrase=a verb that uses more than one word to say it Ex: I will do my homework.

Principal Parts of Regular Verbs

Present (shows something happening right now); has no ending
Example: “play” “talk” “wash” Present participle (shows continuing action); ends in –ing Example: “playing” “talking” “washing” Past (shows something that already happened); ends in –ed Example: “played” “talked” “washed” Past participle (helping verb + 3rd principal part) Example: “had played” “had talked” “had washed”

Principal Parts of IRREGULAR Verbs
An irregular verb is a verb whose 3rd and 4th principal parts do NOT end in -ed
