1
Fibres A fibre is a thin thread of a natural or artificial substance, especially one that is used to make cloth or rope.
3
Difference between natural and synthetic fibres
Synthetic or man – made fibres can easily be distinguished from natural fibres, such as silk, cotton and wool. Although natural fibres may also be made of polymers like cellulose and proteins, they don’t undergo any chemical changes during the manufacturing process and are used in their original form.
4
Uses of synthetic fibres
Synthetic fibres play an important role in today’s world and are used either on their own or mixed with other synthetic or natural fibres to create fabrics or products for everyday use. Some uses are : Ropes Parachutes Fish Nets Carpets Tents Fillers in pillows Fabrics for everyday wear like lycra and spandex Blankets Warm and protective clothing for extreme climates Synthetic hair wigs
5
A monomer is a molecule that forms the basic unit for polymers.
Monomers may bind to other monomers to form a repeating chain molecule via a process called polymerization. A polymer is a large molecule made up of chains or rings of linked repeating subunits, which are called monomers.
6
Monomer and Polymers
7
Regenerated Fibers Regenerated fiber is created by dissolving the cellulose area of plant fiber in chemicals and making it into fiber again.
