Members of the Public and Other Organizational Personnel Working in Proximity to RASP Controlled Areas
2
Radiological Affairs Support Program
What is RASP? Radiological Affairs Support Program Supported by the Radiation Safety Office Ryan Greve, Radiation Safety Officer Ron James, Assistant Radiation Safety Officer Manages sources of ionizing radiation at NPS Radioactive Material Radiation Producing Machines (e.g. Electron Microscopes and X-Ray Diffractometer)
3
Controlled Areas NPS establishes areas where ionizing radiation, above naturally occurring background, may or may potentially be present. These areas will haves signs such as: Controlled Area-Authorized Access Only Radiation Area-Do Not Enter High Radiation Area-Do Not Enter
4
Do NOT Enter! Radiation Area-Do NOT Enter
High Radiation Area-Do NOT Enter

Members of the General Public
By Federal and Navy regulation Members of the Public are limited to 100 milli-rem (mrem) per year above naturally occurring background radiation. Milli-rem is a measure of radiation dose Milli=1/1000th Rem=Unit of effective absorbed dose of ionizing radiation in human tissue What is naturally occurring background? Radiation dose based on where you live, what you eat…basically from being alive!
6
Naturally occurring background
The Navy limit of 100 mrem per year is 1/10th-1/3rd of what you receive just living in a given part of the United States! 1µSv=100µrem=.1mrem
7
Sources of Background Radiation
The average radiation dose due to background radiation is approximately 310 mrem per year. 1 mSv=100mrem
8
What does 100 mrem/yr mean? Equivalent to:
Half of the average exposure due to Radon 2.5 times the exposure due to radioactivity naturally found in your body 25 chest X-rays Less than 1/3 the average dose from background in the United States 20 cross country commercial airline flights
9
In closing… Naval Postgraduate school maintains radioactive material and uses radiation producing machines in a manner consistent with Navy and Federal regulations. Questions? Ryan Greve, RSO
