1 Gas Chromatography - Parts
Erasmus+ Sustainability by Biotechnology Gas Chromatography - Parts Felix Raschke Pavla Prochazkova

2 Air Pump Pumps the sample through the column using a carrier gas (Air)
We use an aquarium pump

3 Gas Injector

4 Injectors Injector puts the mixture into the separation column
So called autosampler

5 Column

6 Column – stationary phase
Quantitative or qualitative separation Polarity similar to the analyte The length and diameter control retention time

7 Column – packed column/ capilary column
Solid substance in the column 1-5m length Capilary column: Wall covered stationary phase Often 30m long We use a column, in which the stationary phase is in a thin layer on the walls of the column, filled with silicia gel.

8 Detector

9 Detectors Commonly used detectors: Thermal conductivity detector
Flame ionization detector Mass spectrometer Atomic emission detector Thermal conductivity detector

10 Use Very sensitive procedure to seperate compounds.
Retention time (time sample spends in the column) characteristic for chemical bonds By combination with mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) verification of very small amounts of substances and structure determination. Used in medicine, biology, forensics, food chemistry and environmental analytics. Example: forensics: analysis of gases in human lungs
