1 Socratic Seminar Protocol, Learning Goals & Self-Reflection

2 Review Socratic Seminar Protocol:
Discussion should be natural and free-flowing – no raising hands. Students should lead discussion, and teacher should be an observer. Give time to honor and discuss all questions – no popcorn questions. Respect classmates’ opinions if they are different – it’s okay to respectfully disagree with someone. Always ground your questions and responses in the text – the goal of Seminar is to better understand the novel and the important themes and literary aspects of it.

3 Student Goals for Discussion:
I can contribute a thoughtful question to discussion. I can build off another’s idea presented in discussion. I can reference evidence from the text/novel we are discussing in one of my questions or answers during discussion.

4 - As you discuss the novel I will be keeping track of who is contributing to discussion and will add those extra points to your Socratic seminar prep = extra credit. - In order to earn (up to 3 points) you have to make at least 3 meaningful contributions to discussion. - See goals to understand what a meaningful contribution looks like.

5 Student Self-Reflection
How well did you meet the 3 student learning goals for discussion today? How could you improve your achievement of the goals? What was one valuable or interesting thing you learned today from discussion? Student Learning Goals: I can contribute a thoughtful question to discussion. I can build off another’s idea presented in discussion. I can reference evidence from the text/novel we are discussing in one of my questions or answers during discussion.
