Brief Overview of the 9th Grade Curriculum
Independent Reading and Book Clubs Foundations of Storytelling The Odyssey The Alchemist Book Clubs Haroun and the Sea of Stories Literary Analysis Essay (argumentative) Narrative Essay Theme Short stories Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet Clips from both movie versions (Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 & Baz Luhrmann’s 1996).

Freshman English Throughout the year, students read a variety of both nonfiction and fiction literature. Although most units have one single anchor text, complementary texts and materials are used to enhance and further develop student understanding of the units’ concepts. Students may benefit from having their own copy of the texts, but it is not required.

Late Work Daily : Late work for daily grades will be accepted for a maximum grade of 50. Major: All major grades are writing assignments or major projects with a writing portion. Late major grades lose 10 points per day late– may be turned in until the end of the 6 weeks for a 50. Test and Papers-50% Reading- 20% Daily Work -20% Final Exam-10%

Homework Independent reading: 2-3 hours per week required for all students Any assignments not completed in class

Why independent reading is important…
The more you read, the better you are likely to do on measures of reading achievement, and the more you will grow your vocabulary New research shows students who regularly read for pleasure also have improved math test scores The average American college graduate only reads 5 books in his/her post-college lifetime. Reading develops a person’s ability to write. A good writer is a good reader.
