6. English Language Arts Goals
To encourage a love of reading and an appreciation for literature.
To introduce students to literary terms appropriate to the study of short stories, poems, plays, and novels.
To provide students with strategies for reading and analyzing complex informational texts so that they may make the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”.
To further develop strategies for pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading of fiction.
To provide an environment that stimulates critical discussion of fiction and non-fiction.
To promote clear and fluid communication and expression through oral and written language.
To enhance listening and presentation skills.
To expose students to a variety of writing modes and purposes including:  personal narratives, persuasive, explanatory, argumentative, fiction, poetry, and drama.
To explore the elements of strong writing including:  Ideas, Organization, Mechanics, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency and Presentation – 6+1 Traits of Writing.
To encourage the development of each student’s unique voice and individual style in his/her own writing.
To study the conventions of standard English grammar, word usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
To engage students with meaningful vocabulary activities which will enhance their reading and writing experiences.
To use technology to compose, collaborate, and create in the Language Arts classroom.  

7. Curriculum and Materials
Holt McDougal Literature -
Holt McDougal Literature, a research-based and digitally interactive English Language Arts program for grades 6–12, provides an engaging learning environment designed to help students achieve success with rigorous standards and next-generation assessments. Helps to develop student abilities to analyze complex texts, determine evidence, reason critically, and communicate thoughtfully, Collections—the nation’s leading ELA program for Grades 6–12—provides a multi-faceted digital and print approach that transcends the traditional anthology and resonates with today’s students.
Novel Study / Independent Reading Projects –
Independent Reading projects will be assigned each marking period. All information will be posted on my website and will be available in the Google Classroom. Whole class and small group novels, representing a variety of genres, will also be read throughout the school year.

8. Assessments & Grading Major Tests / Performance Tasks – 40% (45% MP1)
Quizzes / Performance Tasks – 30% (35% MP1)
Classwork – 10%
Homework – 10%
Quarterly Assessments – 10% (MP2-4)
Students may schedule a retake for a test with a score below a 70. Retake must be taken within 7 days of original assessment, final sore will be an average of the original and the retake.

9. Homework Homework will be assigned most nights Monday – Thursday.
New homework won’t be assigned on Fridays unless classwork is incomplete or there is an on-going, long-term assignment.
All homework, daily or long-term, is posted on my school website.
Assignments can be turned in 1 day late for partial credit, after that they won’t be accepted and a score of 0 will be assigned.
Homework is worth 10% of the marking period grade.
