Astronomy & Space Welcome! Parents: Please fill out the sign in sheet & photo release form near the front door. You are welcome today for this session! Kids: Please get a nametag and coloring page from the front door and then ind a seat! Scientists of Tomorrow source

3 What is Astronomy? Astronomy is the study of space! Astronomists look at things in space like stars and planets. source

4 Solar Eclipse

5 What is an eclipse? How does it happen?
source A solar eclipse happens when the moon is right in front of the sun!

6 There is an eclipse on Monday!
source The last solar eclipse was in 2009! Everyone in the U.S. can see the eclipse, including us!

7 Pinhole Projector It’s never safe to look directly at the sun (even during a solar eclipse!) Instead we will make a pinhole projector! source

8 Pinhole Projector Materials (what you need!) 2 white cardboard plates
1 thumbtack Procedure (what you do!) Make a round, smooth hole in the paper plate using the thumbtack. source

9 How to use it: Put your back to the sun and hold out the plate with a hole in it so that the sun can shine through it. Project it onto the second white plate! To make the picture bigger, step farther away from the second white plate. source

11 What is a constellation?
source What is a constellation? Constellations are pictures made from the stars, like connect the dots! source

12 Make your own constellation model!
Materials (what you need!) Constellation Card Push pin Towel roll Tape Flash light source

13 Make your own constellation model!
Procedure (what you do!) Put the constellation card on top of the cardboard. Punch holes on each of the dots with the push pin. Cut out your constellation card and tape it to the end of the paper towel roll! Once you’re ready, we will project the constellations on the wall! source

14 Satellites

15 What is a satellite? A satellite is something that travels around a planet (like earth) or a moon! They can take pictures of and keep an eye on the sun, Earth or other planets! source
