Microprocessor-controlled movement of solid gastric content using sequential neural electrical stimulation  Martin P. Mintchev, Claudia P. Sanmiguel, Manuel Amaris, Kenneth L. 2 Fig. 1 Schematic drawing of a canine stomach with 6 sets of circumferentially implanted electrodes. The active electrodes and the ground electrodes in each circumferential set were separately short-circuited. The stomach was filled with 400–600 mL of standard dog food mixed with pellets through an intragastric tube introduced in the fundus. After initiating the sequential stimulation, movement of content was monitored through an intraduodenal tube and was quantified by counting the expelled pellets. 3 Fig. 2 Time characteristics of the embedded stimuli applied to the different circumferential electrode sets starting with the most proximal set. The amplitude of the stimulating voltage was reduced in distal direction. Gastroenterology  , DOI: ( /S (00) ) Copyright © 2000 American Gastroenterological Association Terms and Conditions

4 Fig. 3 Graphic representation of the spontaneous and stimulated gastric emptying of pellets recorded from all 1-hour gastric emptying sessions. Each session for each dog is shown separately and is numbered 1.1 (first dog, first session), 1.2 (first dog, second session), etc. A substantial increase in the number of expelled pellets into the duodenum was noted.
