1 Lesson 8 Factor Linear Expressions
Unit 3A Expressions Lesson 8 Factor Linear Expressions

2 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Objective: Swbat factor linear expressions. Do Now: Worksheet

3 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Definitions Monomial – is a number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables. Factor – means to write the expression as a product of its factors. Factored Form – when a linear expression is expressed as the product of its factors.

4 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Real-World Example A rectangular yard is being separated into four equal size sections for different items at a yard sale. The area of the yard is (8x + 12) square meters. 1.) How can you find the area of each section of the yard sale? 2.) What is the area of each section? 3.) Use the Distributive Property to write the area in terms of length x width. Area=8x + 12

Monomials Not Monomials 25 x + 4 x 40x x 2x - 5 2xy x + y

7 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
The greatest common factor (GCF) of two monomials is the greatest monomial that is a factor of both. Methods for finding GCF: list all factors for each (circle the greatest common ) Prime factorization Ladder method Cake method Simplify fraction method

8 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Find the GCF of each pair of monomials 1.) 4, 12 2.) 12, 28x 3.) 5x, 15x 4.) 12xy, 36xy

9 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
5.) 25x, 15xy 6.) 42mn, 14mn

10 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
You can use Distributive Property and the work backward strategy to express a linear expression as a product of its factors. Example: 8x + 4y the GCF is 4 4(2x) + 4(y) factor out the 4 or divide by 4 4(2x + y) Distributive Property

11 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Factor each linear expression. 1.) 3x ) 4x - 28

12 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
3.) 12x + 7y 4.) 3x + 33y 5.) 4x + 35

13 Lesson 8: Factor Linear Expressions
Real-World Problem The drawing of the garden has a total area of (15x + 18) square feet. Find possible dimensions (length and width) of the garden.
