1 Quarter 3 Reflection and Goal Setting
We have just 5 1/2 WEEKS until your AICE Exam!!! How do you feel about the work you have put in so far in order to learn the skills needed? Have you been giving 100% in AND out of class in order to prepare? Have you been truly trying to improve as a writer and a close reader? How do you feel about the test? What skills do you feel you need to work on? What skills have you improved upon over the last three quarters? What will you take from this class? Remember, this class is not JUST about the exam, but also about developing vital communication skills that will make a difference for the rest of your life! What goals do you have for the rest of the school year? How will you end the year with a bang? TEN SENTENCES MINIMUM!

2 Welcome to Quarter 4!!! Nine Weeks to go!!!

3 Quarter 4 Expectations Take NOTES!!!

4 Review Sessions Start This Week!
I CANNOT stress how important these sessions are!!! TRUST ME, you NEED TO COME!! Sign up so we know how many to expect. Here is the tentative schedule, but as I told you, I’ll have extra sessions on other days based on what you all tell me you want to work on. WK 1: March 27th: PLanning, Essay Structure, and Interpreting the Prompt (Me) WK 2: April 3rd: Writing a Thesis and Introduction (Me) WK 3: April 10th: Focusing Your Body Paragraphs & Using Transitions (Mrs. Abi) WK 4: April 17th: The Conclusion & Grammar (Mr. Perry) WK 5: April 24th: Reading COmprehension Review (Mr. Perry) WK 6: May 1st: Last Minute Cramming- AICE Q & A (Me) GET EXTRA CREDIT FOR COMING!!!! Brainstorm WHY students should come to the review sessions

5 Input/Output Homework
These have been DREADFUL (for the most part) and either one of two things is going on. Either you guys still aren’t getting the difference between INPUT (FACTS) and OUTPUT (YOUR response/ commentary/elaboration) or you’re just being lazy and trying to get them done as quickly as possible, without actually thinking about what you’re writing. I want you to think of these as mini body paragraphs for an essay! That means you should have THOUGHTFUL commentary and PROPER GRAMMAR!!! I am implementing a new grading system and if you use poor grammar and write only facts in the output section you WILL LOSE MAJOR POINTS!!! I want to see EFFORT put into these!!!

6 Input/Output HOmework
In the Output section should be YOUR commentary, thoughts, and elaboration on the INPUT (facts) from the news story. It should NOT just be more factual information! THAT is what the input section is for! It should be written in FORMAL language, and use proper grammar!

7 Input/Output HOmework
If you don’t like CNN 10, you can use any CREDIBLE news source you want for these assignments. The point is to gather information so you know what’s going on in the world. If you’re watching the news in the morning and see a story that interests you, write about that! If you’re scrolling through your social media and see an interesting article on Buzzfeed, use that! TURN IN YOUR HOMEWORK WHEN IT’S DUE!!! If it’s not in the drawer when I grade them, it is a ZERO. Brainstorm credible news sources vs

8 Late Work This is unacceptable. I didn’t get a Spring Break because of all the late work that came in at the end of the quarter. It says ON MY SYLLABUS that late work is NOT ACCEPTED, and I’m putting an end to this NOW. If an assignment isn’t in when it’s due, it’s a zero. No exceptions other than medical WITH a note. If you miss a QUIZ, you CANNOT wait until the end of the quarter to make it up. It is UP TO YOU to find out what we did when you were absent and make the work up. I will no longer allow makeup quizzes after a week. If you don’t get around to it, it’s a zero. NO EXCEPTIONS. No more Ms. NIce Teacher. Plus, it’s the end of the year! There won’t be time for me to grade anything that comes in late.

9 It’s Crunch Time!!! Maybe 5 ½ weeks seems like a long time, but I’m telling you, it’s not, especially since we only have 13 classes left before Paper 1 Exam (the essay). THAT IS NOTHING!!! YOU NEED TO BE HERE!!! YOu need to not only be here physically, but also MENTALLY! That means NO talking while I’m giving the class information, NO staring off into space, NO doing work from other classes, NO dozing off in class, NOTHING that takes your mind off the tasks at hand! Are there students around you who are talking too much and standing in the way of your education? Tell them to SHUSH and/or MOVE! I understand if you’re genuinely sick but now is NOT the time to stay home because you’re tired from playing video games all night!!! This also means PEE BEFORE CLASS!!!

10 Building Prior Knowledge
I’ve been telling you to use Achieves to build your background knowledge, but now we’re also going to be using them in class. I will start assigning ONE article each week (but you still have to complete TWO Achieves!) and we’ll use it in a discussion the following week meant to build prior knowledge that can be used on the exam. I’m also working on some trivia and review games that will help. (That’s why I’m hanging onto your essays!) The first article that I am assigning is called “Keeping Watch at Work.” It is about employers monitoring their employees with cameras and other forms of surveillance.

11 Achieves This quarter, since we are using Achieves in the classroom, it is imperative that you read the assigned article. I will check before class, and if you HAVEN’T read it, you will be in the “Hot Seat,” which is somewhere you DON’T WANT TO BE. You’ll find out what it is next week, I’m sure. IF you forgot to do your Achieve by Friday, you will get a ONE TIME PASS IF you find and bring in a related article that we can use in our class discussions. THIS IS ONLY AVAILABLE ONCE!!!

12 Quarter 4 Expectations Quiz
Using your own knowledge, what are three reasons you should go to the review sessions? (3) What should be in the “Output” section of your Input/Output homework?(2) What can you use for sources for the Input/Output homework? (1) If you miss a quiz what should you do and how long do you have? (1) How many classes do we have before the first part of the exam? You can answer in a short phrase or single word. (1) What will we be doing to build up prior knowledge? (2) How many Achieve assignments do you have each week and what has changed? You can answer in a short response. (2) GIVE ME A WORD COUNT ON ALL BUT #5 & 7!!! Sessions give students information they missed or forgot from earlier in the year. They can review skills they have learned. They can practice these skills and get extra help from the teachers. (32) Our response, commentary and elaboration on the input from the news story written in formal language with proper grammar. (19) Any credible news source, including CNN10, the local news, Buzzfeed, etc. (10) We have to make it up with one week of missing a quiz. (12) We have 13 classes left. Using Achieve articles to have discussions in class, and playing trivia and review games. Two assignments but now you will be assigning one of the articles.
