2 What was the Union’s main goal in the East
What was the Union’s main goal in the East? What would the Union be capturing here? The Union’s main goal was to capture Richmond, Virginia, the Confederacy’s capital. This was the most important railroad center, the largest iron mill, and the largest maker of guns.

4 George McClellan commanded the eastern Union army.
McClellan was cautious, nervous, used excuses not to go into battle, organized, a young general, and he was not a fighter.

McClellan’s army would travel around the York Peninsula and attack Richmond from behind and more Union troops would attack from the front.
