6. Diary – Expectations
In Europe, and particularly, in the Italian City States, the numbers of merchants and traders grew and so did their wealth. They became a powerful new class outside the hierarchy of the feudal system. People began to see that it WAS possible to move out of the class into which they had been born. In other words, a change in worldview was taking place.

7. Here is the scenario: A trading ship has just arrived in one of the major Italian ports (Genoa, Florence, Milan, Venice) loaded with goods from the East. It will be your job to write a diary account of one of the merchants just arriving home. Remember, as a writer, you have experienced life in different cultures, you have goods from many areas of the world to share, and you have gained knowledge from different people and lands.

9. Your diary entry should be at least 1-2 pages in length
Your diary entry should be at least 1-2 pages in length. You will need to illustrate the kinds of experiences you have had during your travels, the knowledge you have gained, the differences you observed in the East and how they compare to life in your Italian City State, what goods you brought back. Most of all, you will need to express how your worldview has changed through the intercultural contact and exchanges you have experienced. This diary should be both creative AND informative.

Your brochure MUST include: Slide #1: Title Page (advertising your city-state) Slide #2: A map showing your city-state Slide #3-5 Information on the geography, climate, leadership and social structure of that city. Make sure you draw some conclusions about the success/failure of the city -state you studied.
