Menolfi et al. propose that Smc5/6 is both stabilizing/resolving the stalled replication fork at natural pause sites and working in a parallel pathway with Sgs1 to resolve recombination intermediates arising during post-replication repair. To unite the two roles of Smc5/6, we theorize that Smc5/6 could be preventing both the stalled replication fork and the recombination structure from resolving into another “toxic” intermediates (dashed lines).
