International Enrollment
Procedures and Processes s Visas
2
Why is this important to do this correctly?
Boston Marathon story United States tracks correspondence between certain nations Immigration tracking – the representative (Dr. Murle Mordy) must report to the U.S. department of state who is on our campus and their status Goodwill between nations Fraud of overseas diploma mills Attempted student fraud providing the NACES agencies fake documents Additional requirements of potentially studying in a second language Keep certification: only SEVP Certified schools can accept international students Schools of highest caliber can enroll international students Non profits given preference to take in F-1 (full time Students) Some countries are particular on where their students can study (Saudi Arabia)
3
What is an international student?
Student who is not a United States resident or permanent resident (green card holder) or in the process of becoming one International students can be on United States soil or live overseas A U.S. citizen living overseas is not an international student Citizenship determines if they are international or a US student
4
Where do international students come from?
Dr. Marylou Dewald is in charge of International initiatives – partnering with organizations for referrals (First groups of these will be worked by Jessie alone for consistency and then rolled to the team) JCCC Community College – attending their International Club Meetings & Katie’s initiatives Referrals from international students PPC and other digital sources Students looking for the Univ of Ottawa in Canada (
5
Cultural Differences Levels of commitment & taking away misconceptions early (pulling levels of commitment) Price packaging & total cost Grade School, middle school, high school, associate’s degrees may vary. Ask questions of the student. Wikipedia is handy in this case Be globally aware (Ukraine, Iran, Iraq students)
6
Uncontacted Email Strategy (all except comm. coll. International)
strategy is the same as for U.S. students, but first two vary There is a 2 strategy for Canadian students that are requesting degrees we don’t offer Calls to students are only needed when student is close to completing enrollment process. Documentation, examples and phone calls are all kept on the Enrollment P: Drive – International
7
What is required of an international student that is different?
English assessment if they do not live in an English speaking nation (for waived requirements, see P: Drive – International – English assessment details) NACES evaluated transcript VISA, I-20, and Financial backing documentation (DSO Dr. Murle Mordy) – Only for ground students, international one students is more informal Confirmation of Identity with ID Cards, phone calls, Zoom meetings & Clarifying phone and tones and language proficiency match For a good example of explaining admission requirements, see P: Drive – International – Detailed Master’s Degree Example
8
Online International Online International students do not require a VISA In addition to regular enrollment requirements, we need: English assessment, NACES evaluated transcripts, ID, and a Zoom interview Dr. Murle Mordy (DSO) does not need to be involved if the student is not on U.S. soil Jessie Salsbury is the contact person for international online student questions
9
Campus International Any new, transfer, or special F-1 (Full time Student Visa) must work with Jessie Salsbury and Dr. Murle Mordy Every school has a SEVIS immigration representative that runs reports to the U.S. department of state, our representative (DSO) is Dr. Murle Mordy When you work on transferring an international student from one school to another, the SEVIS immigration representatives must discuss with each other and do the ‘I-20’ transfer : To transfer, students must have an acceptance letter in-hand (see P: Drive) F-1 VISA must be primarily campus students, so you may need to complete a longer unofficial degree plan to be sure no more than 1 online course a semester is needed
10
VISAs? (only FYI) Endorsement on a passport – holder is allowed to enter, leave, or stay for a particular time in a country F-1 is full time student Visa, but other Visa types may study, online or on campus, full or part time VISA research is Jessie Salsbury’s responsibility, then Dr. Mordy if needed (F-1) U.S. Visas website 3 basic groups of VISAs Exhaustive list of VISA types
11
Payment Plans Do not offer payment plans, but international students have specific payment plans we can offer if they request it Additionally, specific initiatives created by Dr. Marylou Dewald have different payment packages which may involve a payment plan These documents and instructions are housed in the P:Drive, but please work with Jessie Salsbury, who works with Heather Long in OUAR
