Countries were competing with each other to create large armies Developed plans for quick mobilization and war Everyone thought they could beat each other quickly

Was meant to stop war, actually helped cause war

Central Powers Allies (Triple Entente) -Germany -Austria-Hungary -Ottoman Empire (Turkey) -France -Great Britain -Russia -Later USA joined

Imperialism European countries competed for colonies in Africa and Asia Almost went to war over these colonies Economics Countries competed over natural resources and markets to sell goods

Nationalism A deep devotion and pride in one’s nation
Led to competition between Europe's major countries for power and territory

Known as the “powder keg” of Europe Made up of many different ethnicities that clashed 1908 Austria-Hungary annexed (took over) Bosnia and Herzegovina

Tensions Rise 1914 Serbia wanted to take Bosnia and Herzegovina
Austria said they would crush anyone who tried

A Single Shot Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie visited Sarajevo (capital of Bosnia) on June 28, 1914 Assassinated by Gavrilo Princip Member of the Black Hand terrorist group

Germany told Austria to do whatever they wanted, Germany would back them up Serbia presented with an ultimatum End all anti-Austrian activity Allow Austrian officials into the country to investigate the assassination And others Serbia agreed to most demands

July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia Same day, Serbia’s ally Russia mobilized their military and started marching for the Austrian border August 1, 1914 Germany declared war on Russia France responded by mobilizing for war to defend Russia, their ally August 3, 1914 Germany declared war on France
