1 APP Network Meeting Spring 2009 Mathematics
Session 1:Introduction to APP and AFL Spring Term 2009

2 Objectives To outline the purpose of the day and place it in the context of the National Strategies’ plan To remind subject leaders of the place of APP in the DCSF’s AfL strategy To discuss the importance of APP within new assessment arrangements for KS3 Slide 1.1

4 Progression Maps Probing questions
Why is it a good idea to split this shape into rectangles to find the area? How do you go about calculating the dimensions of the rectangles in the compound shape? Form a compound shape by pushing together two rectangles. Compare the areas and perimeters of the rectangles with those of the compound shape. What has changed and why? What happens if you join the rectangles in a different way? Why?

5 Progression Maps What if pupils find this a barrier
Pupils sometimes just add or multiply numbers they see because they do not understand the concepts of perimeter and area. Give pupils opportunities to explore maximum area and perimeter, using a given, small number of square tiles

6 Planning for progression Strengthening subject pedagogy
Strong senior and subject leadership, departments working collaboratively, secure self evaluation processes Planning for progression Strengthening subject pedagogy Providing personalised intervention Tracking pupils’ progress including AfL and APP Securing consistent pupil performance across core subjects (addressing factors influencing in-school variation) Slide 1.2

7 Funding £150 million over three years to support schools in
developing their use of assessment for learning Funding 2008 – funding for all schools based on £1000 per school plus a sum for each pupil 2009 to 2010 – targeted funding for those schools that need extra help and those who can share good practice Slide 1.3

8 The objectives of the AfL Strategy include:
2008 – 2009 Every school introduced to APP in English and mathematics, and offered training 2009 – 2010 To offer direct support to schools that have not managed to establish APP Slide 1.4

9 AFL APP Day-to-day Periodic Transitional Slide 1.5
Learning objectives made explicit and shared with pupils Peer and self-assessment in use Pupils engaged in their learning and given immediate feedback AFL Periodic Broader view of progress across subject for teacher and learner Use of national standards in the classroom Improvements to medium-term curriculum planning APP Transitional Formal recognition of pupils’ achievement Reported to parents/carers and next teacher(s) May use external tests or tasks Slide 1.5

10 APP is a structured set of resources and guidance to support periodic assessment against national standards What is APP? Slide 1.6

11 Two purposes of APP Periodic assessment to track pupils’ progress using National Curriculum levels and sub-levels including the identification of pupils requiring intervention support Informing teaching and learning through: Pupil curricular targets Curriculum planning and review Slide 1.7
