Subitizing Quantities
Subitizing is the ability to name a quantity of objects without having to count. On average 6 or 7 is the largest number that could subitized in a random arrangement but we can learn to subitize larger numbers by partitioning. This is a more sophisticated skill than counting and one that needs to be encouraged if pupils are going to be able to calculate fluenty. NCETM Primary Magazine Issue 71 – Maths in the Staff Room
