GIFTED GAZETTE 2.1 Oct. 16th - Oct. 20th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor This week we will… continue reading chapters 8-11 identify story themes and story conflicts begin designing end of novel “3-D Dodecahedron” project Language/Writing: identify, create, and use vivid action verbs use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills write persuasive essays Spelling: spelling pattern -ear, -are, -eer, -air, -ere Math: This week we will… fluently add and subtract using strategies based on place value and properties of addition (associative, commutative, and identity) enrichment of curriculum through Math Stars problem solving master 12’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test: 25 correct facts in 1 minute, 40 seconds. Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: We will begin a long-term research project on dog breeds. Each child will choose a breed and use print and electronic resources to locate needed information and ultimately write a non-fiction report. Start collecting some info. to bring to school, see the attached recommended websites to research. This is going to be “Doggone Fun!” Dr. Grasperge will be visiting next week to quench our curiosities about animal care and emergencies. On-Level Spelling: gear, scare, fear, cheer, spare, hear, rear, stair, airfare, career, compare, spear, beard, area, appear, yearly, tear, lair, mere, snare, fort, dart, worm, sincere, staircase Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 11 pages captivate, captive, captivity, recapture, statement, stationary, statue, understate FRIDAY Test Schedule: Reading: Reading comprehension test Vocabulary: Lesson 11 test Language: action verbs and mentor sentence skills Spelling: Math: Test on addition and subtraction. Use the pre-test to review/prepare! Fluency Test for 12’s Retests on any missed facts will be given on Wednesday. This will be the last opportunity to earn “extra toppings” for our Sundae Celebration. A note from the teachers We loved seeing your t-shirt book reports on Friday! Thank you for sharing your book interest with our class. Storybook Character Day is Tuesday, 10/31. We hope our gifted kiddos choose to show their quick wit and creativity by dressing in a clever “pun costume” OR other character costume of their choice. MOBY MAX! Please consider setting an at-home goal for your child to log-in and practice/accelerate reading and math skills using this individualized learning program. Each student has a username and password and should be using this resource to maximize their learning potential. Please continue to study multiplication facts nightly! Our goal is 25 problems in 1 minute and 40 seconds to achieve mastery. Wednesday is the last day to retest on any missed facts. Our Sundae celebration is set for Tues. 10/31.
